How Value Score works

Coffee Value Finder starts with the raw economics, rewards strong Amazon ratings, and keeps low-review products from floating to the top too easily.

Raw formula score

Unit price / (rating cubed x review confidence)

valueScore = unitPriceCents / (amazonRating ^ 3 x reviewPenalty)

1. Normalize the unit price

Ground, whole-bean, and instant coffee use cents per ounce. Pods use cents per pod. Those groups are never mixed into one unit label.

2. Reward rating strength

The Amazon rating is cubed, so a higher rating matters meaningfully without hiding the actual price.

3. Penalize thin review depth

Products under 200 reviews get a proportional confidence penalty. A product with 100 reviews receives half credit for review confidence.

Value rating

Why it is now 4.89 instead of only 4 / 5

After the raw formula scores are calculated, products are ranked from best to worst and converted to a continuous 1.00 to 5.00 rating. Lower raw formula scores receive higher value ratings.
